Why we built Block Fire — and why “compliance partner” beats “installer”

By Reagan Dempster, Director

The fire safety industry is full of companies that install a system and walk away. We think the building owner deserves better. Here's the thinking behind Block Fire.

If you own or manage a residential building over 11 metres, the last few years have probably felt relentless. Grenfell changed everything about how building safety is regulated, funded, and enforced — and rightly so. But the industry that's meant to help you comply hasn't kept up.

Here's what we kept seeing. A building stuck paying around £10,000 a month for a waking watch, with no one telling the owner that the government would fund the permanent system that ends it. A contractor treating site fire detection as a box-tick, until an insurer raised a JCoP question and the whole thing became urgent. A fire alarm installed and signed off, with the building owner then left alone to handle the certification paperwork, the funding claim, and the regulator's questions.

The common thread: companies selling fire safety as a product — a box of hardware, installed and invoiced — when what the customer actually needs is an outcome. A compliant building. A funded project. A clean audit trail. Peace of mind that the thing standing between their residents and a fire actually works, and that the paperwork will survive scrutiny.

That's the gap we built Block Fire to fill.

We're a compliance partner, not an installer. The distinction matters. An installer's job ends when the system is on the wall. A compliance partner's job is the whole outcome — checking whether your building qualifies for funding, handling the application, designing and installing the right system, certifying it, and maintaining it so it stays compliant for years. Funded where funding exists. Compliant in every case.

We're early in our journey, and we're honest about that. Our own BAFE SP203-1 certification is in application; until it's awarded, we deliver through established certified installers, so nothing about your building's safety waits for our paperwork. We'd rather tell you exactly where we stand than dress it up.

If you're carrying a waking watch you suspect you shouldn't be, or running a site that needs covering properly, that first conversation is free and there's no obligation. We'll give you a straight read on where you stand.

That's the whole idea. Building safety, done properly.
